Why Hardwood Floors? Starting our DIY

Kitchen with tile floor
Our kitchen / dining area when we first moved in

When we moved into our home, we knew there were things we would want to change. One of the first things: the floors.

We live in an open concept ranch home with GREAT sight lines. And we had 5 different floorings. FIVE. Carpet, tile, and three different colors of LVP. There were literally random transitions in the middle of rooms. While this might not have bothered everyone, and no one that came to visit ever mentioned it, this bothered Shawn and me. It bothered us a whole lot.

In addition to the differing floors, I have a ... thing... about carpet.

Carpet's gross. I said it. It's hard to clean, and our carpet was already there when we bought our house. So no matter how well I vacuumed it or how many times I ran the carpet cleaner through the bedrooms, I didn't know what could be in those carpets.

Clearly we didn't like our floors.

We decided to replace all of the floors so that we could run the same thing through the entire house. With our style of home, consistent flooring can really make the space feel more cohesive. To maintain the aesthetic we envision in our home, we settled on using hardwoods. We didn't hate the wood-look LVP we had, but we would have had to buy new for the whole home to get the floors to match. Additionally, our home was very dark when we first moved in, and the large stretch of LVP in the living room was also very dark. This wasn't helping our lack-of-light situation.

Hardwood floors are a really lovely option, and they're what I've had everywhere else I've lived. They're beautiful and easy to clean and maintain once they're finished. Unlike LVP (luxury vinyl plank), hardwoods impart a lot of warmth and character. There is a clear difference in the feel of a space with real hardwoods versus a material like vinyl.

Additionally, if we decide in 10 years that we want a different color of floor, we won't have to rip it up and re-do it. We can simply sand what we already have a re-stain a different color.

Finally, hardwood is natural. After we'd made our decision, I realized a very obvious, but often overlooked, fact - LVP is made of plastic. No matter how "luxury" your flooring is, it's still not a natural material, and in my opinion real materials will always be more luxurious. With the growing concern over the effects of microplastics in our every day lives, I'm glad we chose to go with a natural material.
